Dear Teachers, Greetings from the Pumpkin Farm! It is that time of year again on the farm when the pumpkins are growing, sunflowers are sprimging up, and the summer gardens turn to fall gardens. We hope you had an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing your classes at the pumpkin farm. Best wishes for a successful school year.
We believe we could help with an exciting hands-on learning adventure on the farm. We focus our activities on Virginia SOLs. Teachers will receive grade specific SOL correlates to farm activities, pre-trip planning ideas, and activity sheets for making the most of the pumpkins and farm experience back at school.
Classes will learn about plant, animal, and insect life while touring our learning gardens and visiting our farm animals. We cover plant parts, life-cycles, food chains, nutrition and healthy eating and natural resource conservation and recycling. Classes will visit our learning gardens, barnyard corral, frog pond and butterfly house. Your class will also take a hayride out to the pumpkin fields where each student will pick a pumpkin to take home. Children can explore our corn maze and sunflower trail.
Tours last 1 1/2 hours. Please allow additional time for our play area that includes a straw fort and climbing net as well as time for picnic or snack. Picnic areas, water, and restrooms are available. The farm cafe and market will be open 9:30-1:30 for teachers and parents wishing to purchase pumpkin and apple butters, jams, pumpkin baked goods, cider, sodas, hotdogs and popcorn.
The cost of the tour is $5.00 per child. This includes all farm activities and a pumpkin for each child. No fee is charged for teachers who may also pick a free class pumpkin when they accompany a class of 15 or more students. Parents pay a $3.00 admission fee and pumpkins are charged separately. Tours are available October 1-31.
